10 Important Items for Survival

            By John Milandred

A mini survival kit is a small survival kit which consists of the most essential outdoor survival tools and supplies which are the hardest to improvise or replace. A mini survival kit is intended to be carried along all the time and is usually designed to complement other survival tools carried along in a larger, separate bag.

The items included in a mini survival kit are difficult if not impossible to manufacture or obtain in real world survival situations. A mini survival kit is intended to remain with you always, be appropriate to all environments, without being too large. Meeting your basic needs during a disaster or survival situation is the key to surviving that that situation.

10 important items for survival:

  1. 1.      Water Treatment

Having a means to purify water in a survival situation will help keep you hydrated, your brain functioning properly and your focus on survival. We simply cannot survive without water.  Your survival kit should contain water purification tablets or a personal water filter bottle that removes impurities, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, metals and odor.

  1. 2.       Compass

It is essential to know which direction you are headed and where you need to be. Make sure you include a compass in your survival kit and know how to use it.

  1. 3.      Fire Starter

You must have a way to start a fire to stay warm or cook your food.  Include a lighter, matches, or a flint bar in your kit.

  1. 4.       First Aid Kit

You do not want to be in a disaster or survival situation without a first aid kit. It is also a good idea for everyone to know basic first aid.  Check within your local community to find out where you can take a basic first aid class.  In most communities local fire departments will offer these classes.

  1. 5.       Mirror

Having a mirror in your kit can be used for signaling for help, to start a fire, or check your face or back for wounds that might need to be treated.

  1. 6.       Paracord

Paracord has hundreds if not thousands of uses. These are just a few of the practical and potentially lifesaving uses of paracord.  Paracord can be used to create a makeshift shelter which is crucial for protection from the elements.  It can be used to build snares and traps.  The inner strands of the paracord can be used to make traps for catching small game. You can create a fishing line or gill net to catch fish. You can also use paracord to make a tourniquet, secure a splint, and make a sling for your arm.

  1. 7.       Survival/Emergency Blanket

A Survival or an Emergency Blanket can be used as a makeshift shelter, as a groundsheet, heat reflector, water collector, signaling device, sun shade, and a poncho.

  1. 8.       Multi Tool

The idea of incorporating several tools in one small portable unit is very old, dating back at least as far as Middle Roman times. There are many different versions of multi tools that might include a knife blade, a reamer, a bottle opener, screwdriver, wire stripper, pliers, a can opener, nail file, tweezers, folding scissors, a saw, a tooth pick, and a magnifying glass.

  1. 9.       Lighting

Flashlight, head lamp, light sticks and candles can help assist you in the dark, should you need to gather firewood.

  1. 10.  Survival Knife

Survival knives can be used for trapping, skinning, gutting, and cutting meat and food, wood cutting, shelter building, defense and protection, digging, hunting, carving a container for food or water, and used as a mini machete. Your survival knife should be made from good quality steel and be strong enough for rough field use.

It doesn’t matter if you purchase a ready- made survival kit, or you put your own together.  What does matter is that you have the important items with you should you find yourself in a survival or disaster situation.  Your basic survival kit could mean the difference between life and death.
