What is an MRE Meal?
MRE (short for Meals Ready to Eat) are compact and durable, fully self-contained survival meals. MRE meals are fully cooked and can be eaten with no preparation whatsoever. Although no heating is necessary, most MREs come standard with a flameless ration heater which can be used to quickly and effectively warm the MRE food without the need for any sort of flame. Each MRE has an average of 1,000 to 1,300 calories - about the calorie count of a full regular meal.
Why are MREs a perfect survival food?
Because MREs were originally developed for use as military rations, they have many qualities that make them an excellent survival food choice. MREs are compact, lightweight, durable, nutritionally valuable, require no preparation, and have a decent shelf life. MREs are successfully used in rescue and emergency situations, aid operations, and famine relief as well as in outdoor adventuring and survival and disaster preparedness.
Compact, Lightweight & Durable
MRE Star military style meals ready to eat use retort packaging to ensure the meals are compact. MRE meals by MRE Star were designed to be carried in a backpack or otherwise transported and the retort packaging not only ensures shelf life but also keeps the meals safe in storage and in transit.
Nutritionally Valuable
MRE Star MRE entrées are as nutritious as a regular meal. Each MRE Star meal contains between 1,100 and 1,300 calories so you know you're getting a full meal each and every time you use an MRE Star meal.
Do Not Require Water or Prep
MRE Star MRE meals are perfect for survival situations where potable water is limited or unavailable. Since MRE meals do not require water for preparation they are an excellent survival food to keep on hand to ensure that precious drinking water can be preserved. In addition MRE Star meals require no preparation so they can be eaten on the move, or when cooking is not possible or preferable. MRE meals are available with flameless rations heaters which can be used to quickly, safely, and effectively heat your meal without any sort of flame.
Shelf Life
Since MRE meals were originally developed for the military, shelf life was an important factor. MRE Star meals meet the military specs for shelf life, which varies greatly depending on the storage conditions. MRE meals stored at 120 degrees farenheit will have a shelf life of one month, MRE Star MREs stored at 50 degrees F will have a 60 month shelf life. With proper storage MRE meals can last up to 5 years, but they can also survive extreme temperatures albeit with a decreased shelf life.
